Community Engagement Programs

Aashray aims at reaching out to people especially to those in need. We always try to stand by the people with our efforts. It organizes a plethora of socio economic developmental activities for development of the society.

Aashray indulges in several programmes to meet the demands of the poor. One such initiative is distribution of warm clothes and blankets. Every year we distribute blankets to the destitute in remote districts of North Bengal and donate blankets to needy people during the chilling winter season. In return we are awarded with a satisfied, happy smile.

Participation and Implementation of Mid day meal.

The Mid-day Meal Scheme is a school meal programme of the Government of India designed to better the nutritional standing of school-age children nationwide. Mid-day meal (MDM) is a wholesome freshly-cooked lunch served to children in government and government-aided schools in India. On 28 November 2001, the Supreme Court of India passed a mandate stating, “We direct the State Governments/Union Territories to implement the Mid Day Meal Scheme by providing every child in every Government and Government assisted Primary School with a prepared midday meal.

As per Supreme Court’s order, Kolkata Municipal Corporation authority too is eager to introduce this scheme in 264 KMC Primary schools and 104 Sishu Siksha Kendras (SSK) in Kolkata Municipal Wards.

Cooked Mid-day Meal Programme was introduced in West Bengal in January, 2003 and is being implemented in all eligible schools satisfactorily.

Ashray partnered with Primary Education Council with the objectives of –

  • Improving the nutritional status of the children of the school.
  • Encouraging poor children, from disadvantaged sections, to enroll, attend and retain in school more regularly and help them concentrate on classroom activities.
  • To develop the habit to stay in schools in the children especially during interval and to reduce the drop-out rate.

Aashray supply cooked food in 12 schools of 130 and 131 Ward of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Apart from this we supply dry ration of mid day meal in 26 schools of Alipurduar Municipality.

Aashray runs the program with an efficient team which constantly monitors the process; food reach to its respective destination on time. Our aim is to eradicate hunger not to making profit.

Food, shelter and education are basic building blocks of a nation. By providing food to thousands of children we ensure that they can concentrate on their education and contribute towards nation building.

We are happy to become partner of Primary Education Council , west Bengal to serve  healthy nutritious tasty meals to students in the endeavour to build a hunger free literate state.

Skill Development Training Unit.

Skills development is the process of identifying gaps in skill and developing and sharpens skills. It is important because the skills of an individual determine his or her ability to execute the plans with success. Skills are the tools to achieve the goal in life.

In this modern time, skills are necessary to prepare persons for the job market, enabling them to earn their living and mainstreaming them into wider society. Skill development among unemployed section can help to build self –esteem and self confidence, and grow social networks leading to a high quality of life.

Skills are primary ingredient for the socio-economic development of a country. With a population of 1.2 billion growing at a rate of 1.19%, skilling of India’s human resource has become a herculean task. Recognizing the urgency of this, the Government of India has established the National Skills Development Corporation with the mandate to develop and support skilling initiatives in India.

National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is a not-for-profit public limited company incorporated on July 31, 2008 under section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 (corresponding to section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013). NSDC was set up by Ministry of Finance as Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Government of India through Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) holds 49% of the share capital of NSDC, while the private sector has the balance 51% of the share capital.

Ashray partnered with Paschimbanga Society for Skill Development (PBSSD) under the administrative control of Department of Technical Education, Training and skill Development, Government of West Bengal and take charge of eight Skill Development Centers in various districts including Kolkata, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Alipurduar, Malda, South 24 Parganas and Purulia.

Skill is an important attribute to reach one’s goal. Aashray helps people by providing training courses on different fields so that people can become self-reliant. Training courses on sewing, auto-mobiles, beautification and many more are served free for the people from less-privileged or deprived section of the society. Certified teachers conduct the campaigns for students. Till date, we trained 2000 trainees and out of it, 200 are placed in different job and small business.

Students come to the centres to learn countless trades ranging from Sewing to Automobile and walk out being skilled with a dream of engaging in job or starting self business.

Unemployment is a burning issue. But with the dynamic initiative, a huge cache of unemployed youths gets top class training and becomes job ready.

Our initiative is to give the available manpower a push with the aim that they take the state forward and contribute to development.

Nation Building is a continuous process. Involvement of all is absolutely necessary for it. Our little initiative can bring a smile.

Urban Housing

Access to housing facilities, is a basic human need, next only to food and clothing. So it is a basic need of every human being to feel protected and comfortable under a roof. Considering this the government of india has been implemented Housing for All (urban) program with an objective of providing provision of housing to all the citizens specially those who don’t have any ‘pucca’ houses and belongs to economically weaker sections. Aashray also helps those economically backward people by building houses. Thus we assist in the promotion of affordable housing for weaker section; our main working area includes Malbazar Municipality, Kalmpong Municipality and Darjeeling Municipality.

In this initiative also Aashray partnered with local Government and take part in construction of 200 houses of poor people in urban west Bengal and acts as implementing agency of Government scheme.

Active participation in Swachh Bharat Abhyan and Mission Nirmal Bangla by making Toilet.

Cleanliness is next to godliness

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is one of the most significant and popular missions to have taken place in India. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Interprets Mission of Clean India. This drive was formulated to cover all the cities and towns of India to make clean. This campaign was administered by the Government of India. It was launched on 2nd October in order to honour Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a Clean India. Mahatma Gandhi said , ‘Sanitation is more important than Independence. The cleanliness campaign of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was run on a national level and encompassed all the towns, rural and urban. It served as a great initiative in making people aware of the importance of cleanliness

Open defecation is one of the main causes of deaths of thousands of children each year. Not only latrine construction, the Swachh Bharat Mission will also make an initiative of establishing an accountable mechanism of monitoring latrine use.

 We the team of AAshray partnered with local Government in construction of household toilets, community toilets and public toilets.  We have built over 2000 individual household toilets and 100 community toilets in rural districts across West Bengal.

We came down heavily to eradicate this precarious situation. With our initiatives, we have reached out to remote household and make our nation cleanlier.

Skill Development courses for Women and Youth Empowerment

Undeniably, India still is a male-dominated society. However, this stigma is gradually fading away. Aashray always works for women empowerment. One of our priorities is educating the girl child. We also train women free of cost and impart skills in them so that they can be at par with others. We provide different skill development training so that they can earn a living and contribute towards development of the society. We also help them financially to be self sufficient.

Health Screening in the Slums.

The WHO defines adolescents as the people between 10 and 19 years of age. Adolescence is one of the most rapid and formative phases of human development and the distinctive physical, cognitive, social, emotional and sexual development that takes place during adolescence.

The health status of an adolescent determines the health status in his/her adulthood. Many serious diseases in adulthood have their roots in adolescence. The main health issues faced by the adolescents include-Mental health problems, early pregnancy and childbirth, (HIV/STI) and other infectious diseases, violence, injuries, malnutrition. To achieve wholesome adolescent health, we need to have a multidimensional approach covering all the adolescent health problems with special emphasis on mental health, behaviour change communication towards healthy lifestyle and positive social environment to acquire life skills.

Special drive to address the crisis management in Civid-19

The Pandemic corona virus (COVID-19) is a crisis like no other; the world has faced in recent decades in terms of its potential economic and social impacts. Lockdown of whole country, several people has lost their jobs and also difficulties in running business. The situation is much worse for the Dail community.

Government has taken special initiative to distribute free ration system for both BPL and APL category situation; it is not enough to meet the need of all the people especially for those who has no income in this lock down to feed their family. Aashray has come forward partnering with Government system to help them with some basic needs in this situation. We distribute food as well as essential groceries in the district of Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, North 24 Parganas and Kalimpong district to give some relief to those who suffering various difficulties to meet the daily needs of life.
